From Pillowcases to Lace Knitting

Jan is doing a beautiful job on this knitted lace scarf.  We will have three new colors of Baby Alpaca Lace in the shop by Tuesday.  Baby Alpaca is so soft and knits beautifully.  Let us know if you're interested in learning lace knitting.

If you're not quite ready for lace knitting - check the list of knitting classes we offer.  The Modular Vest is a great pattern - and easier than it looks.

Six ladies had fun and made pillowcases in our class last night.  Not just any old pillowcase - these had borders, contrasting flanges and French seams.  They all finished one and planned to make a matching one at home.

Knitting, Sewing, Quilting - take your pick or even better learn them all!

Bring your projects by the shop - we love "Show and Tell".

Just One Star

Moda Fabrics is giving us the opportunity to make "Just One Star" .  Moda needs at least 1800 quilt blocks to make quilts to send to injured soldiers.

We have put together "Just One Star" packets with the fabric and pattern for only $1.79 each.  Or you can go to the website:  http://www.unitednotions.com/LA_just_one_star.pdf   print the pattern and use your own fabric to make the block.  Use a cream background fabric with medium red or blue for the star. Bring your completed block back to Sew Together no later than  Saturday, April 23 and we will mail it for you.  Or you can mail it - the address is included with the pattern.

Beautiful new fabric in the shop and lots of quilting, sewing and knitting classes.  Find the class you want and join us.

See you soon.

National Quilting Day

Saturday, March 19 is National Quilting Day.

Some of us think every day is National Quilting Day. This quilt is a Dresden Plate.  It is hand pieced and hand quilted.

I recently went to an auction because I knew they were selling some old handmade quilts.  I didn't buy any.  It made me feel good that the hand quilted ones sold really good prices.

Stop by to see the new fabrics that have recently come in.  If you're not a quilter, these fabrics might just make you want to become one.

Applique - Maybe You Should try It

Pat Sloan gave a wonderful lecture and trunk show of about 40 of her appliqued quilts tonight at the Forsyth Quilters and Piecers meeting.  She has written many books on applique - is a fabric designer and quilt pattern designer.

This picture is a sample of hand applique from one of our BOM's.  If you haven't tried hand applique or machine applique come by to see some of our samples at the shop. We have two excellent teachers:  Bev teaches hand applique and Beverly teaches machine applique.

Stop by soon.  Sit and knit a while or just enjoy browsing our beautiful fabrics and yarn.

New Techniques - One Session Workshops

Prairie Points
We've just scheduled two workshops on topics that customers have requested - prairie points and paper piecing.  The prairie points are shown on a baby quilt displayed in the store.  You'll be able to learn this new and quicker way to make prairie points.  The workshop for paper piecing is designed to teach you in one session this piecing technique for accurate piecing of points, tips, stars, you name it.  When you complete this workshop you'll be ready to take on a larger project.

Come by the shop to sign up for classes.

Rainy Days

We seem to be in Rainy Day season! What kind of memories do rainy days bring to mind?  Mud puddles? Reading a good book?  Maybe some of you had a tin roof to listen to the rain.  Rainy days feel like quiet time to me - don't know why.  Good times to read, sew, quilt or knit.

We are planning and scheduling for the next few months.  Share with us your thoughts and ideas for classes you might like at Sew Together.  Look at the schedule on this page and come in or call us if you have questions about any of them.  We hope you'll find one or more that you want join.  Classes are learning experiences - and so much more.  We have fun, get to know one another better and make new friends.

Step out of your comfort zone and learn something new!

Enjoy your day.

Just Look What They Did...

There are so many reasons we love being a part of Sew Together.  The beautiful quilts our friends bring in to share with us,  the sweaters they knit, getting to know new people, seeing people we haven't seen in years.  Watching you learn new skills and gain confidence in your abilities.  We recently heard a customer say, "I can't believe I made this".  We can all do much more than we think we can - if we're willing to take the first stitch!  Or is it the first cut with the rotary cutter?

Our Day and Night Quilt class finished this morning.  Look at this beautiful quilt made by Wanda.  We'll have this class again this quarter.  It' a fun quilt to make - and you'll learn to "twirl".  Ask us about "twirling".

This beautiful "French Braid" quilt was made by Pat.     Jean teaches the French Braid class.

Check the class schedule on this page - knitting, quilting and Block of the Month.  Let us know if you would like to sign up for any of them. We love hearing from you.

Have a good weekend.  Hope to see you soon.

Things You Don't Want to Miss!

We have five in our "Top Down Cardigan" class.  This has been one of our most popular classes and we will offer it again next quarter.  If you've never knitted a top down sweater, you should try this one.  Fun to knit and it looks good on everyone.  The sweaters are coming along beautifully - and - the five women are having a great time getting to know one another. Lots of laughter as well as learning.  Maybe we'll have a fashion show when they get their sweaters finished.

We're scheduling lots of classes for the next few months.  Have you made a T-Shirt quilt yet?  We have a sample of Eleanor Burns "Day and Night" quilt in the shop.  Beverly will be teaching a new Tote Bag class - quilters and knitters can always use another bag. Call or stop by to sign up for classes or to get more information.  Let us know about the things you're interested in learning.

When you're in the shop, there are a few things you don't want to miss:  the Janome Horizon 7700 - a truly amazing machine,  Joyce's beautiful paper pieced quilt hanging on the wall  - new yarns and fabrics - and last but certainly not least - the bowl of chocolates on the table!  Come in soon.

Finishing Things...

Don't you just love finishing things:  Reading a book?  Watching the end of a movie?  A good meal?  Doing laundry?  Finishing a quilt?  Or knitting a sweater?  We just finished a class on a Tumbling Block Quilt.  The finished quilt tops are beautiful.  We don't have pictures yet, but they are similar to this one.

Do you need a quilt for a special baby?  These printed panels are in the shop – Jean has completed two beautiful samples – one boy and one girl.  Some people call these panels “cheater panels”.  We call them fun and easy.  Add a special border and some fun quilting and it is a great quilt.

Stop by soon to see our beautiful fabrics and yarns…or just to say “Hello”.

This Life Is Good!

We often say this at Sew Together...and we really mean it.  Life is good and we are so fortunate to be here doing what we love and sharing it with others.

We need your help with this blog - bring your quilts and knitted projects in so we can take pictures to share.  It's a great way for your friends and family to see what you're creating!

We are working on a quilt that was hand pieced by a blind lady many, many years ago.  Can you imagine that?  A great granddaughter of this lady is having the quilt restored.  What a wonderful treasure - and life lesson this is.  Her blindness did not define her life.

A quilt or a hand knit sweater is more than something to keep us warm.  It is the gift of time and thought and skill given by us to someone or given to us by someone who cares.

Hope to see you soon.
